Housing affordability is the most important crisis facing the western world. I say western world, since we can put food on our tables every day. There are many places in the world where housing affordability is not the critical issue. In countries where malnutrition reigns or fear of Russian missiles is a daily event, of course housing the middle and lower classes hardly appears on the radar. But in the west, and especially in my neck of the woods Prince Edward County, the last few years have seen such an explosion in property values that unless you are a multi-millionaire, you cannot afford to live here. As we wrestle with solutions to this crisis, our municipal council is completely missing the boat on solutions. They have OK'd several hundred new housing units for construction, but these will be so far removed from the ability of 'normal' people to purchase. The following article from 'The Guardian' struck me as the perfect solution. Housing Co-ops! Not only are they affordable, but they can also be beautiful. Read on.
