"You have been measured,, you have been weighed, and you have been found wanting. In what world could you possibly beat me?"
Count Adhemar, the nobleman (and the villain) asks William Tatcher, the peasant (and the hero) following a jousting competition midway during the movie, 'A Knight's Tale'. As the audience, we sense the pain and humiliation that Tatcher is feeling. If anything called fairness exists in this world, Tatcher should return the favour, we feel. Tatcher gets his revenge in the end. All is well with the world.
After what happened during the 2010 World Cup between Uruguay and Ghana, today could have been the ultimate grudge match. If anything called fairness exists in this world, Ghana will return the favour, we believed.
In Psychology, there's something called 'Fallacy of Fairness'. It refers to the belief that all things in life should be based on fairness and equality. And psychologists label this as a cognitive distortion, an error in our thought process. The belief that all things in life should be based on fairness and equality, is not how the world supposedly works. And it is fallacious to think otherwise.
How else could you explain what happened between Uruguay and Ghana today? Not only did Andre Ayew miss the penalty and thus a golden opportunity for revenge, Luis Suarez, the very talented and very shameless villain from 2010, the one many love to hate, played crucial assists in the two goals Uruguay scored today! I am sure, for majority of the fans watching the match, this was not how things were supposed to play out. Fallacy of Fairness, indeed.
However..
The camera lingered on Suarez once the final whistle blew. Focusing on him crying inconsolably. In the realisation that, even though Uruguay won today, since the Koreans beat the Portuguese in the other match, they are now out of this World Cup. And that this will be his last World Cup. And he will not get another chance at glory. Schadenfreude.
Fair now? Not close. For that Ghana has to beat Uruguay on penalties. At the World Cup. And Suarez should be playing that game.
