I can't help but wonder why we're all so busy all the time. I don't want to suggest that busyness, or being busy, is necessarily good or bad; I can't help but wonder why we're in a constant state of busyness. Between instances of working multiple jobs, being constantly tethered to our devices, and keeping our schedules filled to the brim with activities, why are we so busy? Acknowledging the log in my own eye, why am I so busy?
As such, what I'd like to invite you to think about this week, as I've been invited to think about, are the two following questions: What's the purpose behind our busy state of being, and what are we doing to manage it?
I'll admit that both of these questions are assuming quite a bit because you might not be busy, or you might not consider yourself to be a busy person. Regardless, I still wonder about this state and the bigger picture to it all.
Taking the first question into consideration, are we striving toward a specific goal, milestone, or benchmark? Are we doing our best to make ends meet? Are we attempting to set ourselves up for a better future? Are we enamored with busyness that we're content with the amount of activity we're doing? Are we running away from someone or thing and buying into the illusion that staying busy will somehow help us out? Maybe it's all the above, maybe it's not.
There's also the second question to consider as well- What are we doing to manage our busy state? Are we doing anything at all? Are we making ourselves a priority? Are we acknowledging whatever thoughts and feelings that bubble up within us when the busyness becomes too much, when it's perhaps overwhelming and too much to handle? Are we carving out time for self-care, a Sabbath, and rest in general? Are we leaning upon others to help us out when things become too difficult to manage? What are we doing about our busyness?
Overall, while I hope you take some time to consider any busyness you're into, more importantly, I also hope you're making efforts to manage it in ways that contribute to your overall health and well-being.
