Fossil fuel companies... . Some of us are not stupid enough to fall for their greenwashing campaigns. We know their environmentalism is just virtue signaling, we know they will keep making profits off fossil fuel.
But, I remember my primary school level geography classes and they taught me about renewable and non-renewable natural resources. The former can be replenished within a tiny fraction of our lifetime, the latter cannot. Fossil fuel belongs to the latter.
So, even if they are entirely profit-driven, they should realise their golden hen will run out of eggs. Sooner or later, they need to invest in renewable alternatives that they can milk for eternity.
But, for some reasons, they refuse to.
Maybe it is greed.
Okay, I know corporations have always had such trait. But, my mind naively thought they were much more level-headed than that.
I mean, if they are truly level-headed, they would realise long-term profitability is better than the short-term one. Never mind the environmentalism. Even as businesspeople, they are very short-sighted.
Maybe they truly loooove fossil fuel.
Those people join the industry not for the profit, but because they genuinely fossil fuel is more than just black gold, it is the universe's holiest and most divine element.
They believe it is mankind's duty to keep using fossil fuel for everything and anyone who work on the alternatives are the devil's incarnate, literally worse than Hitler. They believe fossil fuel is more precious than water and air.
Obviously, I am just having a fun with my assumptions. While I have encountered fossil fuel lovers, I have never encountered ones who are that zealous.
I think I'll use Occam's razor here. Maybe it is simply greed-induced short-sightedness and I simply overestimated their ability to envision long-term profitability.
But, I also won't rule out zealous love. I mean, from time to time, we have been shown that humans can have extreme attitudes towards religions, politics, races, ethnicities, genders and even sports and celebrities.
Hence, why I believe extreme love of fossil fuel is a possibility.
