It is way past time for a random fluff piece, so no hidden passive/aggressive subtexts intended here, I have simply discovered fashion pins and am now in 7th heaven and wish to share the fun.
Fashion pins come in all different styles, all different sizes and shapes, but are basically like a cuff link, a tiny brooch pin, or an earring. Sometimes men will wear them on their hats or lapels, like a little flag pin. Naturally the ones I am currently loosing my mind over happen to be more akin to little pearls, beads, and rhinestones. These things are just amazing, they are like a button you don't even have to sew on.
You can completely alter an entire outfit in a matter of minutes, take it in where it is too loose, strategically add a row of pearl buttons, create a V neck, or pin down a collar that wants to curl.
Fashion pins have often been used in the wedding industry. If someone has lost or gained a few pounds or a dress doesn't fit properly on that big day, you can take in a tuck, add some gathers, or quickly repair a hem.
I have no idea how I even managed to live my life before I discovered these things! I actually do sew quite a bit, but often I don't want to take the time to do a major over hall, I just want to dress up an old teeshirt or temporarily raise a hem. You can do these things with safety pins, try to be strategic about it and hide the tacky aspect, but fashion pins are so, so much nicer. They look like they belong there, like you intended to design it that way.
They have nice clips on the back and I haven't poked myself yet! They are very comfortable to wear. I suppose if one had small children or babies, they could be choking hazard, but I haven't got any small children around and I have a nice tackle box hubby wasn't using to keep them in.
They are also very inexpensive. You can of course buy real pearls or elaborate cloisonne, but the tiny, inexpensive mass produced ones tend to be more conducive to creativity and give you the ability to properly drape fabric in all kinds of new and inventive ways.
I am laughing here, but draping fabric in new and inventive ways has always been something that just makes my heart sing! I don't wish to step in a hornet's nest or stir up any controversy, but I do wish more women and girls would fall in love with fabric again and indulge in the delight of just draping and shaping it around one's body, because fabric is fun.
