The manuscript for 'Engines of Engagement - A Curious Book About Generative AI' has gone off to the proofreaders. That's not to say that it's finished, but it's close enough that we can tidy up the main body of text.
I'm usually appalled by how many errors they come back with: for one of my books there were something like 1500 tracked changes - although to be fair, most of them were my failure to capitalise my 'i's or to use questionable semi colons; like this. Doubtless the diligence of my co-authors will have reduced the error rate here!
My focus this week has been on the illustrations, trying to finish the final set for Sae to work from. On a good day i can get three done, but of course this work is iterative, and i now find that the style i'm working too is evolving and may not match the earlier efforts… so we will see. Probably we will end up with a larger set to choose from.
It's exciting: the book will be out before Christmas and we are into the detailed planning. I'm trying to really focus effort here to get it done, but there is always a strange feeling before a book takes flight.
A half dozen people have pre-read the manuscript, which is always a somewhat comforting feeling (assuming they don't just look at you and say 'what were you thinking…' which has happened to me a few times…
We will probably have a test print in a couple of weeks, which is when it starts to feel very real. More to follow.
