One that football (soccer) in Northern Ireland is a game played by all (natch!), but a commentator on the podcast said that they'd been told there are now more nationalists than unionists registered to play soccer in Northern Ireland. So to categorise it as this side or that is incorrect. The point was made that some are arguing the GAA is coming with the begging bowl, but some would argue in the GAA that the Executive has underfunded the GAA for years. There's a 107 grass soccer pitches in Belfast, there's 16 GAA pitches. And a strategy document released in the 2010s by the Council said 38 were needed at a minimum but only 5 have been built. What's striking is that all this flies in the face of the idea there's some centre-ground where problems can be dealt with technocratically. The example of pitches alone suggests that so much is seen as zero-sum. Those who have want to hold what they have. | | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
