While everyone loves receiving heart-shaped milk chocolates and teddy bears on Valentine's Day, Peeps Marshmallows have become – literally and figuratively – one of the sweetest Valentine's Day gifts among teenagers.
First introduced in 1953, Peeps were originally designed as marshmallow chicks that took about 27 hours to make by hand with a pastry tube. Due to technology, the production time was slashed to six minutes per chick.
While Peeps are most popular during Easter, Peeps have evolved to become a byline to Valentines, with many special Valentines-themed sweets, including Peeps Marshmallow Hearts, Strawberry Crème Flavored Marshmallow Hearts, Vanilla Crème Flavored Marshmallow Hearts and the Lovebird Valentine's Pop.
Peeps can be transformed into a variety of cake and cookie pops, shakes and crispy treats. However, many view peeps on their own as the best sweet.
After Peeps halted production for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's day in 2020 during the pandemic to prepare for Easter of 2021, Peeps have made a comeback for Valentine's Day with flavors ranging from strawberry to raspberry.
However, Valentine's Day is merely a stepping stone for the biggest holiday for Peeps: Easter.
Peeps recently unveiled their newest flavors for Easter 2023: Dr. Pepper, Kettle Corn, and Mike & Ike, which will be exclusively sold at Walmart.
Other flavors to look for in 2023 include wild berry bunnies, cotton candy chicks, Hot Tamales cinnamon chicks, Peeps party cake chicks, marshmallow decorated eggs and milk chocolate covered marshmallow chicks.
On January 29, second-generation owner of Just Born Quality Confections, Ira "Bob" Born, commonly known as the "Father of Peeps," passed away.
Aside from the annual PeepsFest, the New Year's Peeps Chick Drop, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the founding city of Peeps, declared Feb. 15 "Bob Born Day" in 2019. Given that "Bob Born Day" is near Valentine's Day and shortly after his death, hopefully a lot of sugary sweet love will spread through Peeps Valentines Hearts on Valentine's Day and the future to come.
It would take 1,464 Peeps Bunnies to reach the top of the Statue of Liberty, but a simple three pack of any kind of Peeps is enough to fill anyone's heart and stomach.
