Ever since Donald Trump was elected in 2016, comedians have said that instead of making it easy for them, The Donald actually made it more difficult because everything that Trump does is so absurd it's almost comedy-proof. How do you make fun of something that is already self-parody?
Even beyond Trump, things today seem so absurd that it's like we're living in a dark comedy. So much so, what does April Fool's Day even mean anymore? How do you do April Fool's-type jokes when so much of reality seems like an April Fool's joke?
To prove my point, the following are not April's Fools jokes.
An ex-president and current GOP presidential candidate's threats against a judge's daughter are so unnerving that a sitting judge goes on CNN to warn something must be done.
Despite this, the host of a venerable Sunday morning political news show refers to it as a sign of "a deeply divided nation" and not bat-shit crazy dangerous fascism, for reasons.
A self-proclaimed pro-life senator moves to block access to in vitro fertilization, which would enable people who want children to have them, but that doesn't matter to anti-abortion people because a tiny collection of cells is actually a whole-ass person.
A major bridge collapses and blocks a vital American shipping port, but instead of rallying the nation to fix the problem, Republicans are focused on blaming the tragedy on woke.
An actual elected official declares that a college basketball team's busses at a Michigan airport are part of a conspiracy to sneak in undocumented immigrants (guess which party!) and even when proven wrong, he doubles down (also mentioned at the previous link).
An upcoming draft choice in the NFL draft declares that he doesn't believe in space nor planets, which makes me wonder what he thinks those little lights up in the night sky are.
The guy who as president four years ago reacted to the worst pandemic in 100 years by getting angry at reporters for asking tough questions, accusing nurses of stealing masks, holding chaotic daily news briefings, and telling people to inject bleach and eat horse past is out here as a GOP candidate asking people if they are better off now then they were four years ago.
A 19th Century prude and chronic masturbator named Anthony Comstock has become the hero of the Republican Party. Comstock was obsessed with sin and telling others what to do and is the namesake of the Comstock Act, the anti-porn law enacted in the 1870s that modern-day GOPers are using to go after abortion and eventually contraception.
The former president and current GOP presidential candidate's son accuses a former president's wife of being a trans woman, with next-to-no coverage from the DC political press.
Right-wingers claim that Easter also being International Transgender Day was an attempt to mock Christians, when International Transgender Day falls on March 31, every year, and as any sane person knows Easter's date changes every year.
And finally, this is the guy the majority of people who identify themselves as Evangelical Christian support for president.
No April Fool's trick your friend or relative posts on Facebook can keep up with any of this.
The last word goes to Rufus Wainwright.
