Chris Heaton-Harris: Border Poll to be called within a year Certainly had me wondering for about ten seconds or so. And thinking, too soon for a victory by those pro-Unity as well as this is exactly what the Tories would do as a stunt. But, there's a deeper question there. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility a British government might indeed try this as a stunt - precisely to shore up some support, given the unlikelihood of it passing at this point in time. Those in British politics who like to parade the rather thin layer of pro-Union politics they profess might be quite open to such an idea - saving the Union for another decade or more. Because it does feel to me that were a vote held in a years time it would be in favour of the Union. Track further out and that becomes possibly less likely. Though it is possible that were the current status quo to prevail - and were the DUP able to work the institutions, that might lead to a situation where that status quo was regarded as acceptable. So to some degree one has to hope that those who are pro-Unity have at least some plans in place should London decide that it is expedient to go for a poll. But given that - at least under this government and very possibly the next, that poll will only be held if the outcome is almost certainly a No to unity, how do those who are pro-Unity engage with that? | | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
