The next time you feel sorry
for having more melanin in your body,
The next time you worry
about seeing fewer zeros in your salary than your contemporary,
The next time you are angry
about always being overpowered by adversity,
The next time you wallow in self-pity
over not being able to seize the right opportunity,
The next time your eyes yearn for acceptance, for that stamp of approval from a trifling jury
for who you are and everything that you want to be,
Look up at the sky,
spend a day staring at it wide-eyed.
Watch it turn from blue to white to red,
watch it house the clouds, the moon, the stars, the sun and the wishes that went unsaid.
Watch it as it metamorphoses and maneuvers without a hint of a could I, should I, will I, won't I, maybe, maybe not,
Watch it as it wheedles your heart into believing you're complete the way you are,
Watch it as it tells you that you were perfect from the start, that you're not some spare part,
Watch it as it shows you that you're strong and you belong, that you were never an afterthought.
