The 'Thievius Raccoonus' is an ancient heirloom in the Sly Raccoon franchise. Sly Raccoon was one of the first games I ever played and remains one of my favourites to this day, so I wanted to make some fan art. I found a reference of a very intricate-looking Thievius Raccoonus by Gary Vanaka and recreated it as a 3D model using Blender. I made some small changes to the design, such as making the mask at the top more like those in the game and using the same font as the Thievius Raccoonus from the third game.

I felt particularly proud of my UV unwrapping, as I had struggled with this in my Steampunk Goggles project, but now feel more confident with visualising where the seams would lie.

In terms of improvements, I think I could work on the lighting. The concept art is glistening with sparkles but my rendition is dull in comparison, so needs brightening up a little! Furthermore, I added less dents and scratches to the piece because I felt that a gold material wouldn't have so many. However, I do think I lost a bit of storytelling by taking this out, and for a non-realistic piece, perhaps I should have used some more artistic license! The dents that I left in are quite difficult to see, so with better lighting I could draw attention to these small but significant details.
It was really fulfilling to create fan art of a game that means so much to me. In the future, I would like to try making a 3D model from concept art without embedding my own creative choices to see whether I can adapt to different styles and create a close replication of the original art.
