I didn't found anything new in this film beside what was already portrayed in films like Begum Jaan, Tikli and Laxmi Bomb, Lakshami etc. The film is very much one character driven and we see Alia in almost every scene. I would have loved to see more of time period it was set in. Maybe it was symbolic and what mattered in life of prostitutes was their 'galli' as they have been socially boycotted. But the film would have got much more depth if there was more to it beside Gangubai.

In most of scenes, everything is told and not shown like conflict with Razia, how she is doing injustice to prostitutes. It becomes one sided. But then it's Bhansali and everything is loud and audience is thrown to too much exposition. In attempt to make Gangubai larger than life, other characters got ignored. Other characters come and go without any strong presence and don't achieve full character arc.

The speech at Azaad maidan was powerful and worth applaude. It would have been beautiful to see more of Gangubai's internal struggle, her fears and pain. It all just became surface level.

The last line was beautiful and really touched my heart."Heroine banne aayi thi Gangu,Kambhakhakt pura ka pura cinema ban gayi". Years after the death of one person who aspire to be Bollywood heroine became whole cinema. I think that's sum up what it's like to dream and being human.
