Writing class prompt: In the middle of the night

In the middle of the night
I can't sleep
My back hurts, my knees hurt,
My GI hates me,
My heart beats too fast, and
I cry sometimes.

So I go to my office
Sit in my chair
Open the blinds and
Look at the stars.
Then I turn my eyes to what lies below them
My cathedral of pines, oaks, and maples
The Snow White ground
The two tree trunks that lean toward each other and form an X in my purview.

I wonder how I got lucky enough
To enjoy this in peace.
I write at my desk and look out my window while doing it,
Like Louisa May Alcott did.
I create.

During the day, there are endless interruptions
That destroy my concentration.

In the middle of the night,
I hear none of these things.

I hear myself instead.
