After seven days of war in Ukraine, one million refugees have fled to neighboring countries. To help both those who flee and those who remain, $1.5 billion in humanitarian aid was pledged on Tuesday, March 1.

On Thursday, March 3, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Twitter that "we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries" and called for peace.

To provide humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian population and its refugees, the United Nations and humanitarian partners launched coordinated emergency appeals on Tuesday, March 1, totaling $1.7 billion.

At the end of the launch event, which lasted just over two hours, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths announced that "$1.5 billion has been pledged today."

The UN estimates that 12 million people in Ukraine will need relief and protection, while more than four million Ukrainian refugees may need protection and assistance in neighboring countries in the coming months.

Two plans have been launched, as UN Secretary General António Guterres said, "to help people in Ukraine and beyond."

"In Ukraine, the plan requires $1.1 billion to meet the growing humanitarian needs of more than 6 million people affected and displaced by the military operations over the next three months. Outside the country, we are requesting $551 million to help Ukrainians who have fled across borders, mainly to Poland, Hungary, Romania and Moldova," Guterres said.
