Use of the word 'escalation' has become the norm when describing Ukraine's actions against Russia. I find this so incorrect and damaging to Ukraine. And frankly, to any nation that defends its territory. Escalation is something an aggressor does. Escalation is a ratcheting up of an invasion. Ukraine is defending and trying to liberate its sovereign territory. It is fighting back. Russia is the nation that escalated this war by crossing the territorial boundary between itself and Ukraine. Escalation is a word we should associate with the action the aggressor state engaged in at the outset. Russia escalated this war by trying to erase Ukraine from the map. Russia escalated the 'conflict' (another word I hate seeing in use here) when its troops raped and massacred civilians. Russia engaged in escalation by bombing civilian targets and sending military into the Zaporizchia nuclear plant. Russia escalated by using phosphorous munitions. Ukraine has been thus far, in a defensive posture. The fact they are now pushing a counter-offensive cannot be characterized as escalation. It is clear and simple a defense of their territory. Ukraine is defending, not escalating!!
