Saturday Odds & Sods: Rock House

Peter Adrastos Athas

May 27

Our trip to Memphis was great fun but it left me out of writing sync if there's such a thing. That's why I'm keeping this post short and semi-sweet.

As you can see from the featured image, I can't let last weekend go. Hence the Roy Orbison theme song, which was recorded at Sun Studio. It was originally written by Harold Jenkins DBA Conway Twitty, but Roy performed some serious song surgery on it.

There's some dispute about the title. Is it one word or two? I'm a two-worder.

We have three versions of Rock House for your listening pleasure: the Orbison original, Conway Twitty, and Brian Setzer.

How about another Roy Orbison classic from his Sun Records days?

We begin our second act with a brief tribute to a music legend.

Tina Turner, R.I.P. America loves a comeback story. Tina Turner's comeback in the 1980's was nearly unprecedented. She was more popular than ever and wasn't encumbered by 180 some odd pounds of Ike.

Tina's appeal was timeless but she ran out of time this week and died at the age of 83.

I have nothing original to say about Tina Turner, so I'll just post one of her songs as the last word of a long life and our second act:

We begin our third act with our favorite stolen feature.

Separated At Birth Casting Edition: There was only one choice this week, Angela Bassett's Oscar winning turn as Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It:

We might as well play the movie theme song at this point:

The Movie List: I have music biopics on my mind today. I usually prefer not to repeat myself but here's my list from the 9/10/22 edition of this feature.

The Music Biopic Dozen

  1. Bound For Glory
  2. Walk The Line
  3. Love & Mercy
  4.  Coal Miner's Daughter
  5. The Buddy Holly Story
  6.  Lady Sings the Blues
  7. Sweet Dreams
  8.  What's Love Got To Do With It
  9.  Backbeat
  10.  Ray
  11. Get On Up
  12. Elvis 2022 & 1979

What's Love could rank as high as number 3, but I'll stand by my list as well as my Lyle:

Your Weekly Oscar: I'm trying to send out good vibes after Tina Turner's passing. In this week's OP feature, the Modern Jazz Quartet's Milt Jackson brought his vibraphone mallets into the studio with the Oscar Peterson Trio.

Have I told you lately how much I love Oscar Peterson?

The Best Of Letterman: Ready for more Tina Turner content? Here she is on Late Night in 1984:

Saturday GIF Horse: Ready for more Angela Bassett content? Here's the scene in Waiting To Exhale where Angela set her cheating husband's car ablaze. Burn, baby, burn.

Let's close down this virtual honky tonk with some more music.

Saturday Closer:  Ike Turner is usually persona non grata at First Draft BUT this appearance on The Midnight Special is as smoking hot at this week's GIF horse.

That's all for this week. The last word goes to Tina Turner and Angela Bassett:
