"Sail Forth," by Festive Vector, is the definition of an indie game for many. Low poly graphics, unknown game developers, and calm vibes are all hallmarks of this game. First released on the Nintendo Switch, the game enchanted players with its smooth aesthetic and unique gameplay mechanics.
Festive Vector, a one-man team run by David Evans, is responsible for the hit that is "Sail Forth." Published by The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, a well-known indie publisher, "Sail Forth" first hit the deck as a Nintendo Switch game followed by other platforms such as Steam and Epic Games.
Visually and audibly, "Sail Forth" is a masterpiece. The game's art style is a delightful blend of vibrant colors and a minimalist design that creates a visually appealing and calming atmosphere. The stylized, low-poly graphics contribute to the game's accessibility, making it enjoyable for players of all ages. Each island you encounter is a picturesque masterpiece, and the dynamic weather system adds an extra layer of realism to the overall experience. The ambiance, produced by Festive Vector and Andrew Nack, is a blend of guitar and synth music, providing a relaxing yet exciting soundtrack to sail upon.
The gameplay revolves around exploration, resource management and ship customization. Players start with a small boat and gradually upgrade and expand their fleet by exploring a procedurally generated world filled with islands, each offering unique challenges and opportunities. These include races, combat and training that help the player enhance their skills even more. In between islands, traveling on the open sea is both intuitive and satisfying, with responsive controls that give a real sense of control over your fleet.
The progression system is well-balanced, offering a sense of accomplishment with each completed mission or discovered island. Collecting resources such as wood, gear and crew members is essential for upgrading and customizing your ships, providing a strategic layer to the gameplay. The variety of ship customization options allows players to tailor their fleet to their preferred playstyle, whether it be focused on speed, firepower, or exploration.
While sailing might be its namesake, some consumers might find it a bit tedious in all of "Sail Forth's" nautical adventures. With tasks that take you across the map, sailing and resource management do sometimes take the upper hand over excitement and gameplay.
As with any other indie game, "Sail Forth" is sure to have some bugs that can distract from the overall experience; however, the game is still sure to be enjoyed by an audience of all ages.
