Summary: Key Points of the Article

Seven U.S. gambling giants announced the creation of a "trade group to promote responsible gaming." The members of the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) stated they will use their collective information on problem gamblers to conduct research on the problem and devise prevention techniques. The members of ROGA control over 85% of the nation's legal online gambling market. The group announced they would fund the group with more than $20 million.

ROGA members stated their intent to work together on multiple gaming issues including education, creating conscientious marketing and advertising campaigns, and responsible best practices in the industry. The members indicated that ROGA would also share information related to consumer protection through "an independent clearinghouse."

The industry has grown dramatically since 2018 and 38 states plus Washington D.C. offer legal sports betting. There are now 15,000 gaming transactions per second that occur in the U.S., a number that has doubled in the past year. This explosion in gaming has also increased the number of gaming and betting scandals and approximately two million Americans are believed to have a severe gambling problem. As many as eight million more are believed to have a "mild or moderate gambling problem." Despite the issues, many skeptics wonder if ROGA will help solve the problems or if the group is simply a marketing ploy.

Exercise 2 Critical Thinking Questions

  1. What is the stated purpose of ROGA?
Answer: ROGA intends to work together on multiple gaming issues that include education, the creation of conscientious marketing and advertising, and identifying responsible best practices in the industry. The members of ROGA will also share information related to consumer protection through "an independent clearinghouse."
  2. What do some critics maintain is the real purpose of ROGA?
Answer: Several prominent gambling insiders believe ROGA is just a marketing ploy to draw more attention to the industry and their specific firms. The formation of this group also shows these firms are concerned about the negative side of the industry and could help their public image.
  3. What type of group or team is ROGA?
Answer: ROGA is a problem-solving team since its intent is to solve issues related to gambling addictions and devise ways to limit the problem. It can be self-serving since the formation of such groups could keep Congress from intervening and passing restrictive legislation that would financially harm the industry.
