Losing someone dear at any age can present a challenge that greatly influences the path one takes in life. When I was five years old, I received the devastating news that my father passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack while on a business trip. This moment forever changed my life and left a huge void in my heart. Despite the extreme sadness I felt, I discovered comfort and healing through horseback riding.
Growing up, I have always had a connection with animals. My dad's close friend, an established equestrian Brad Wolf, would often take me to his farm and allow me to walk his horses. Every time we arrived at the farm, my eyes lit up and I felt an instant connection with the horses that I couldn't quite explain. I felt like they understood my grief and offered me comfort without saying a word.
From that moment on, I knew that horses would play a significant role in my healing journey.
I began taking lessons at Aintree Farms in Memphis, Tennessee and the moment I sat on a horse I felt as if the saddle beneath me could sense the depth of my sorrow. Riding transformed from a pastime into a form of therapy- a time when I could momentarily escape from the heaviness of my emotions and find moments of serenity.
The advantages of horseback riding go beyond the physical act of sitting in the saddle. For me, it offers a sense of control and mastery when other things in my life seem chaotic and unpredictable. By learning to communicate with my horse through cues and gestures, I gained confidence in facing life's challenges. The rhythmic movement of riding had a soothing effect on my mind, helping me release built up tension and anxiety. Each stride brings me a sense of freedom and release, almost as if the weight on my shoulders is momentarily lifted.
Studies have shown how horseback riding can offer health benefits, especially for those coping with trauma or loss. The repetitive nature of riding encourages relaxation and mindfulness which helps alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Moreover, the bond formed between the rider and the horse nurtures trust, empathy, and emotional connection. According to an article written by the Washington Post, there are many therapeutic effects seen with equine-assisted therapy as it can facilitate healing and overall mental well-being. The bond and interaction with horses assist in healing as horses have the ability due to their sensitivity, intuition, and developed non-verbal communication skills to facilitate human feelings, help participants regulate their emotions, lower stress levels, increase self-awareness, and boost confidence.
In reflecting on my horseback riding journey, I remain grateful for the healing experience it has provided me with. Horseback riding has taught me invaluable lessons in strength and resilience and has allowed me to connect with my inner self. Although I will never completely heal from the loss of my father, my horse, Mister Carrera, has remained my pillar of strength. For me, it is more than a horseback riding experience; it is about the journey through embracing courage in adversity and acquiring an understanding of the healing power of the human-animal bond.
If you or someone you know is experiencing grief, trauma, or mental health challenges – please take my word for it – go horseback riding. While with these beautiful creatures, you might find the peace and healing I've found that has helped me cope with the loss of my beloved father.
