Behind the massive success of video games are different kinds of companies. A good gaming company can easily be successful, but unfortunately, not all companies maintain a positive reputation. Here is my list of the top three worst gaming companies based on how much hate they have instilled among gamers.
3rd Place: Blizzard
Blizzard has made plenty of good games such as "Diablo 3," "Starcraft," "Overwatch 1" and "Hearthstone." But even though they have made these classics, Blizzard is still one of the worst gaming companies ever. In my opinion, one of the largest reasons why Blizzard is an inadvisable platform is due to its newest game "Overwatch 2."
"Overwatch 1" was one of the best first-person shooter (FPS) games, but Blizzard decided to replace the excellent first Overwatch game with the terrible "Overwatch 2." Though it sounds like a large update, it's the exact same game with the access changed. Originally, players pay a fee to play the game, and then everything in the game is free to use. Now, players can play the game for free, but everything in the game requires a fee to use. This has been a terrible experience for players, like myself, who originally paid for the first game only to have our use of it revoked in "Overwatch 2."
People also dislike this because the developers made the new game far too focused on customizations, such as skins for the characters that now cost money, when nobody appeared to care. People were also excited for the single-player mode because that is the main point of "Overwatch 2," but it turns out that the new story mode only had a few quests, not an overhaul of the entire gaming experience that was expected. Everything people wanted for Overwatch 2 was not delivered. To make matters worse, Axios reported that Blizzard has had a lot of problems with the staff misconduct.
2nd Place: Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts (EA) is one of the worst game companies. It has so many problems that I can't even list all of them. I'll list a couple of reasons why EA is ranked second on this list.
The most important reason as to why EA is so bad is due to the games they make. For example, "SimCity 2013" was terrible because it's overpriced. If you want to play it, you have to play on their servers, which makes you wait, often because their servers are slow, even though you paid $60 to access them. Also, you need the internet to play a simulator game, so there's no option to play when you have no internet service.
Another issue with EA is that they don't care if the game is good; they only care about how much money they make. EA has a lot of games that should be fun to play, but they're poor playing experiences because of EA. For example, Apex Legends has been one of my favorite games of all time, but the only good thing about this game is that it's fun. All the other aspects of it ruin the gaming experience.
For example, the Apex server is the only game that I know that crashed during its world tournament, the biggest tournament in Apex legends. The anti-cheating system is also inadequate as you can see a cheater in this game every day. Moreover, in higher ranks, there is a cheater in almost every single team with almost a third of players hacking in a game. There are additionally other issues such as missing a player in game or disconnecting in the middle of the game which are all network problems.
The queuing system is also at fault within this platform. Low-rank players may be paired up with a Predator, the highest rank in the game that is in the top 750 best players on the server. This type of pairing is unfair and a result of problems with cheaters. Although the game's popularity is dying down, the developers still decided to change the battle pass. Originally, if you pay for one, you just have to keep playing to refill it and you can continue having access. They then changed it to players having to buy a pass for every single update, which made a lot of players quit. After seeing all the players trying to quit, they changed it back, but the damage was done.
1st Place: Ubisoft
Ubisoft is one of the largest video game companies. Ubisoft has made plenty of fun games, such as "Rainbow Six Siege," "Far Cry," the "Assassin's Creed" series, "Watch Dogs" and many more. However, Ubisoft is considered as one of the worst gaming companies. There are unfortunately many reasons as to why the company is strongly disliked, one of them being "Rainbow Six Siege."
"Rainbow Six Siege" is one of my favorite games. It is very popular and known within the gaming community, however, there are a lot of problems due to Ubisoft. For one, the lack of communication between the company and the player is a large problem. The problem of cheating in "Rainbow Six Siege" has been highly contentious. There were plenty of cheaters in the game before that were very obvious where they often killed without aiming and made their players fly. Even though they updated the anti-cheating status, the issue still remained for a long time and they banned 10 thousand to deal with the problem. Subsequently, Ubisoft added a new anti-cheating system after players complaining, but the system failed to reduce cheating.
Another issue at hand is that that Ubisoft makes great first games for each series, however, the following ones after the first fail to match its quality. For example, the "Assassin's Creed" and "FarCry" series both share this problem. Additionally, buying the game is also a frustration for many Ubisoft users. Just like EA, users have to make their own login connection. However, for Ubisoft, even if you bought the game on the game launch software Steam, you still have to go through Ubisoft to login and connect through a separate account. All Ubisoft Connect does is try to get people to buy their in-game items. It's just pain that takes away from the fun of playing the game.
All three companies have earned hate for different reasons. Blizzard has issues with their community interactions, EA is hated because they released their game too quickly, and Ubisoft has problems with their game quality. However, I think the biggest problem all three companies share is how they organize their games. They've all made poor decisions for each of their otherwise excellent games or series, which leads to loss of support from players and the community, the very people the games they make are for.
