Here's another post that may prove incomprehensible to banjoagbeanjoe... but some will have noticed that there was a massive leak of video in the last fortnight of what purported to be the next iteration of GTA, that is GTA VI. Personally, for all the flaws, and more on that some other time, I've really liked GTA in various iterations (possibly IV was my least favourite) - not least because I really like open world games, as noted here previously (have been playing the second-last Far Cry which is okay, entertaining in its own way, but no GTA). Anyhow, resisted the urge to look at the video. I've seen a couple of screen shots and that's enough. What was there, if accurate, was clearly from deep in the development weeds and difficult to make any assessments of how good it is, gameplay or indeed if the graphics will be significantly different to GTA V. What does look good is a female playable character. Long overdue in the non-online iterations of GTA. How different the tone of the game will be from its nihilistic predecessors remains to be seen. Actually, to my mind, GTA V was vastly more nihilistic than GTA IV or GTA III: San Andreas (speaking of which got the updated version of that a while back and can't say I enjoyed it much. Sure there were arguably slightly better graphics but to no purpose. There's something about the original that has a visual purity of sorts).
But some of the reporting around it has noted a key aspect of this, that those who work on development of GTA VI are likely to be those worst impacted by the leak. Home working, security and so on will likely be restricted even more. The process to release is almost certainly going to be impacted negatively - the broad consensus is a release in 2023/24.
In that context there's not a lot of entertainment value to the leak. And the supposed leakers message that they wanted to 'deal' - presumably to forestall the release of more materials, shows their naivety. I was saying to a friend, they're more than likely to feel the long arm of the law on their shoulder sooner rather than later. But then this being the world of gaming and this being 2022 there were questions as to whether this was a 'deliberate' leak, as it were, given the far from warm reaction to the 'upgrade' of GTAIII: SA and the way in which upgraded graphics for GTA V on the PS 5 appear to have had little or no impact.
