Trust a Tory to use hysterical, inflammatory language, when describing vulnerable, desperate people. Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary who was sacked by Liz Truss for security failings, and then reinstated by Rishi Sunak a few days later (despite further details of security failures), called migrants 'invaders', and thus demonstrated she is a cold, cruel excuse for a human being.
The false hysteria over immigration is reaching feverpitch. After all, the Tories have lurched from one crisis to another, and opinion polls across the country suggest an election defeat is inevitable. With the cost of living being the most pressing issue to most Britons, the Tories (and far-right pillocks like Nigel Farage) are… ignoring this, in favour of the immigration bogeyman. It is not illegal to seek asylum, and it would be the height of cruelty to turn away those who are in desperate need of sanctuary.
There is a famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi: 'the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members'. Right now, there are migrants crammed into a facility that's far too small, down in Manston, Kent. The situation there is dire, and reflects poorly upon Britain as a whole. Meanwhile, Ms Braverman calls these tired, exhausted refugees 'invaders'. Is it any wonder we have lunatics lobbing petrol bombs at migrant centres? The rhetoric of the hard right has dehumanised people, 'othering' them, and distracted us from the real problems. This is because the Tories have no answers to the failure of Brexit, or the cost of living crisis. They need this distraction, and even then, they're botching it, because more and more people are seeing it for the cruel, inhumane sham it is. When did compassion and kindness become such despised qualities among Conservatives?
