Funny what can make someone feel old. For me it was seeing 'aesthetics' shops spring up. These are shops where people are injected with Botox in order to smooth wrinkles. Now I don't know why it makes me feel old, perhaps the word 'aesthetics' in that context - or the use of Botox, I mean that's botulinum toxin, a poison effectively.
Mayo notes:
Botox injections are usually safe when you're under the care of a licensed and skilled health care provider. The procedure can result in unwanted results or even cause harm if it's given incorrectly. Possible side effects and unwanted results include:
- Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site.
- Headache or flu-like symptoms.
- Droopy eyelids or crooked eyebrows.
- A crooked smile or drooling.
- Watery or dry eyes.
- Infection at the injection site.
Rarely, the medicine may spread to parts of the body where it isn't supposed to go. It can cause symptoms there. Call your health care provider right away if you have any of these symptoms hours or weeks after your procedure:
- Muscle weakness.
- Vision problems.
- Trouble talking or swallowing.
- Breathing problems.
- Allergic reaction.
- Loss of bladder control.
As a rule, health care providers don't recommend Botox if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
But look at that first line: "usually safe when you're under the care of a licensed and skilled health care provider"
Except as our nearly former Taoiseach noted this last week:
Stricter regulations for aesthetic medicine including Botox are being worked on, Leo Varadkar has said.
It comes after an investigation found that illegal Botox is being administered by unqualified people, and that prescription medicines were being transported into the State from Northern Ireland.
Speaking to reporters, Mr Varadkar said: "On the licensing system, it's clear that we need a better system."
He added: "I would definitely think that we need stronger licensing and stronger regulation of aesthetic medicine.
"But I think there will always be a black market for these things, unfortunately, and there always been."
Yeah, but the stricter licensing and regulation is the key thing.
