The WV GOP is utterly obsessed with trans kids and it's become a dominant issue in the WV Republican primary race. WV State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has been fighting to keep ONE 13 year old girl off her school's girls cross-country team. He has lost in court and last week he petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case.
He was joined at the announcement by Riley Gaines, a Z list GOP celebrity, made famous by the fact she's a terrible competitive swimmer who is blaming her lack of athletic prowess on, you guessed it, trans women. She's like the Anita Bryant of trans hate, if Bryant had been a nobody loser flogging a nasty ideology that will only be an albatross around her neck for the rest of her life.
The announcement was deeply intertwined with the politics surrounding West Virginia's Republican primary election coming up on May 14. Morrisey is involved in a competitive Republican race for governor, where transgender issues have emerged as a dominant campaign theme.
"We will be filing it over the next month, and we want to make sure we're going to time our filing to maximize the chance that this case is going to be heard and most importantly that we will win," Morrisey said to claps from the other political figures who attended his announcement.
"This is one of the most important cases that my office has handled over the past 12 years. We are vigorously defending the law, and that law is reasonable. It's based on biology, and it's based on fairness. We are working to defend the integrity of women's sports. We must protect our young women."
We must protect our young women which is why there is now a ban on abortion in WV. Right?
Before we look at more of the hateful hysteria, here's some context for the discussion:
In reality, in 2022, there were 700 kids between ages 13 and 17 who identified as transgender. That is 0.68% of all West Virginians 13-17 years old. Statewide, there are only 5,700 adults (ages 18+) who identify as trans, or 0.4% of the state's adult population.
Moore Capito is, as you may have already guessed, the son of Shelley Moore Capito, and the grandson of former WV governor Arch Moore who was a crook. He's a WV nepo baby of the first order, and during his tenure in the House of Delegates, he sponsored a bill to deny gender affirming care to trans kids, and he did it in the typical GOP way, namely based on complete fantasy and willful ignorance:
During debate on the House floor, Fluharty Democratic Del. Shawn Fluharty called the bill "blatantly unconstitutional" and asked Judiciary Chairman Republican Del. Moore Capito if there is any evidence that gender-affirming surgeries for minors are even taking place in West Virginia. Fluharty said he spoke to medical professionals who said no.
Capito said his committee, which greenlit the bill earlier this week, heard no testimony from a doctor saying children were getting the surgeries.
"We don't have any data," Capito said.
Then there's Chris Miller, who I wrote about earlier. Here's another one of his anti-transgender ads:

Here's the thing: these are KIDS. How can you be a fully grown adult and feel this need to punch down and hurt vulnerable kids? What is wrong with your life that this seems like a perfectly acceptable thing to do? It's so awful.
I hate this election cycle.
