The 37th ECMI Modelling Week at the University of Catania has just concluded, today and it was a resounding success!
From June 23rd to 29th, students from across Europe gathered to tackle challenging real-world problems using mathematical modeling techniques. The atmosphere in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was electric with curiosity and collaboration. More detailed information can be found here.
This year's event provided a fantastic platform for young mathematicians from whole Europe, from Portugal to Ukraine, to develop their skills, network with peers, and gain valuable insights from industry experts. A huge thank you to the organizers, participants, and everyone who contributed to making ECMI Modelling Week 2024 such a memorable experience! I would especially like to thank the local organizers Vittorio Romano, Vito Dario Camiola and Giovanni Nastasi.

For over two decades, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) has organized annual Modelling Weeks for students across Europe. These week-long events bring together bright minds to tackle real-world challenges using the power of mathematics.
Here's how it works: on day one, students are presented with a complex problem – not in mathematical terms, but in real-world language. Then, they break into small groups, each guided by an experienced ECMI instructor. Throughout the week, the groups work together, applying mathematical modeling techniques to solve the problem.
The grand finale on Saturday? Each group presents their findings to their peers and prepares a detailed report documenting their approach. This intensive week not only hones their mathematical modeling skills but also fosters essential collaboration and communication in an international setting.
These Modelling Weeks play an essential role in the ECMI Certificate program and in many master's courses offered by ECMI centers. Students, both within and outside of formal programs, gain invaluable experience from these impactful events.
After this year's Modeling Week, we are happy to announce the next one! The 38th ECMI Modeling Week will take place from June 29 to July 5, 2025 at Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania. More details can be found on the following website.
