In the realm of healthcare, patients must distinguish between toxic and non-toxic herbal medicines and seek the expertise of a scientific herbalist for proper treatment, according to Dr. Osei Owusu, a scientific herbalist at Amen Scientific Herbal Centre.
Dr. Owusu emphasized the importance of consulting scientific herbalists rather than generic herbalists, noting the prevalence of unqualified practitioners in the field.
He expressed concern over the rise of fake herbal centers, which he believes are causing significant harm to the reputation and effectiveness of traditional herbal medicine.
He cited a WHO report indicating that herbal medicine contributes to 60% of healthcare delivery in Ghana.
Dr. Owusu highlighted the economic benefits of traditional herbal medicines, noting their contribution to GDP growth and foreign exchange reserves.
Criticizing orthodox medicine, he pointed out that it often fails to cure ailments completely and can sometimes cause additional harm.
As an example, he mentioned paracetamol, which he claimed can cause severe damage to human health.
Dr. Owusu asserted that only ignorance would lead people to discredit traditional herbal remedies in favor of orthodox medicines.
He called for greater recognition and trust in the efficacy of herbal treatments.
Supporting this view, Sheikh Amen Bonsu, CEO of Amen Scientific Herbal Centre, urged Ghanaians to have more confidence in traditional herbal medicine.
He argued that while orthodox medicines have side effects, traditional herbal medicines are safe and free from such risks.
The call from Amen Scientific Herbal Centre underscores the need for public education on the benefits of scientific herbal medicine and the importance of consulting qualified practitioners for safe and effective treatment.
