Gardaí played down repeated warnings from the HSE that a lack of safe access zones was stopping GPs from signing up to provide abortion services, new documents reveal.
In fact, Garda representatives claimed that introducing laws to ensure those accessing termination of pregnancy services were not intimidated outside healthcare facilities could "add fuel to the fire".
It had initially been promised that safe access zones would be introduced in parallel with the rollout of the abortion services in January 2019, but the legislation has yet to be enacted.
Difficult to disagree with the following:
Together for Safety co-convener Yvie Murphy called on the department and the Minister for Health to bring forward legislation "at the earliest opportunity".
"It has been shown time and time again that anti-choice protests and activities are having a negative effect and impact on not only people trying to access healthcare but also on healthcare workers and potential service providers. We know that the general public is supportive of safe access zone legislation. We have been waiting for this since 2018 — we've waited long enough," she said.
Having seen manifestations of this activity outside maternity hospitals - and a complete lack of concern on the part of those holding them for those who are patients there for terminations, miscarriages or pregnancies (and having had experience directly of miscarriage) the bare minimum necessary is to allow access unimpeded for those who require it to hospitals and GPs.

More about her: Anandi Bai Gopalrao Joshi was one of the rarest Indian women who dedicated her life to studying medicine. She was the first female of Indian origin to study and graduate with a degree in medicine in the United States.
Born into an orthodox Hindu family as Yamuna, she was married off early at the age of just nine years to Gopal Rao Joshi, who was a widower and was about twenty years elder than her. After marriage, her husband renamed her as Anandi. At the age of fourteen, she delivered a baby boy, who lived only for ten days due to unavailability of proper medical care. This setback was like a turning point in her life. This motivated her to study medicine and her husband supported her wholeheartedly. In times, when women were just considered for household work, supporting one's wife to go for higher education was rare!
In 1880, he sent a letter to Royal Wilder, a well-known American missionary, stating Anandibai's interest in studying medicine in the United States, and inquiring about a suitable post in the US for himself. Wilder published the correspondence in his Princeton's Missionary Review. Theodicia Carpenter, a resident of Roselle, New Jersey, happened to read it while waiting to see her dentist. Anandi's desire to study medicine, and Gopalrao's support for his wife impressed her, and she wrote to them offering Anandibai accommodation in America. In 1883, despite bad suffering from health conditions, Anandi Gopal Rao Joshi, set out for a long journey on a ship to the distant land of America to pursue education in medical sciences. She faced severe resistance from the orthodox Hindu society at that point in time. She and her husband were also asked to change their religion in to christianity, but the couple faced all odds but did not change any of their decisions.
In New York, Theodicia Carpenter received her in June 1883. Anandi Joshi wrote to the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, asking to be admitted to their medical program, (which was the second women's medical program in the world). Rachel Bodley, the dean of the college, enrolled her. Anandi Joshi began her medical education at age 19. she graduated with an MD on 11 March 1886; the topic of her thesis was "Obstetrics among the Aryan Hindoos".On her graduation, Queen Victoria sent her a congratulatory message. But this achievement was not easy for her. She constantly struggled with declining health due to cold weather and foriegn diet. She contracted tuberculosis.
In late 1886, Anandi Joshi returned to India, receiving a hero's welcome. The princely state of Kolhapur appointed her as the physician-in-charge of the female ward of the local Albert Edward Hospital.
Anandi Joshi died early the next year on 26 February 1887 before turning 22. Her death was mourned throughout India.
My one-line takeaway: The way we look at adversities in our life can actually be a very important deciding factor as to how our future life will pan out.

Professor Johnathan Moyo has called Strive Masiyiwa a bond note billionaire before and he is at it again following a Tweet about the exorbitant pricing of phones at Econet Wireless shops.
A Twitter subscriber named Mhofu Tweeted about the outrageous prices displayed at an Econet shop in Avondale saying:
"Crazy pricing!!
Econet Shop - Avondale sells an iPhone 13 Pro 256GB for US$3975 - almost $4000.
Apple retails this phone for $1099.
Econet is selling it for nearly 4 times it's retail price.
Apple retails the iPhone 12 for $599 while Econet sells it for $2197."

Many people came to Strive Masiyiwa's defence calling the Prof a bitter man and advising him to focus on other issues like fighting the government. The focus of the Tweet quickly turned from the ridiculous prices of the gadgets to the jealous tones in Prof Moyo's words.
Strive Masiyiwa is dubbed the richest businessman in Zimbabwe with a net worth of 3 Billion USD. It's not difficult to see why with the pricing of the gadgets at the Econet shop.
Although Prof Moyo may have thrown a blow by calling him a bond note billionaire, the second half of his tweet hints at the fact that Strive Masiyiwa makes most of his money from overpriced goods and services. Gadgets aside, Econet Wireless is also known for overpriced tariffs and data bundles.
Many people tried to justify the pricing by saying that the gap between the bank rates and parallel market rates is what causes companies to price unfairly. The US dollar has the same value everywhere so that does not justify a phone costing four times its recommended retail price. If anything the RTGS price should be the unstable one since it changes all the time.
