If you don't already know, the floor bed is part of the Montessori philosophy of how to set up a nursery. The idea is that the environments that the child grows up in should always promote the individuals independence and autonomy.
As far as I've seen pretty much anywhere on the interweb, the usual is a cot with the bars... the "prison-looking" one. I wasn't so into the idea: for one, I've baby-sat before and in my experience it's incredibly uncomfortable to put down a baby who is able to stand all the way to floor level despite the bars. Secondly, I've seen the cute videos online and I know that tons of babies don't even want to be in those things by themselves... and so you end up having to lay down with them IN them.
For these two reasons we decided to opt for a floor bed and let me tell you it's was an amazing decision.
Disclaimer: we bed share during the night time, so Little One really takes her naps there, it's also where we put her to bed in the evening and I leave her there when I go to bed. As soon as she wakes up, I go get her and take her to our bed.
Here is a brief list of reasons why getting a floor bed is an amazing idea:
- You can lie down while your baby plays - but still staying within her reach!
- You can put baby to bed by lying next to her... then easily roll away!
- Baby doesn't need you to get in or out of bed. It's also less dangerous: she cannot fall out of it if it's already at floor level!
Added bonus: because of all the lying down you do in the bed, this will have your scent which will help your baby settle.
I mean, it's a no brainer really.
