How I started watching Marvel Movies
Is it too late to admit that I was not a huge movie enthusiast? I didn't watch movies every weekend-neither in theater, nor at home. I did watch movies sometimes when I am bored, but I could go 6-8 months easily without watching any movie at all.
All of that changed when my elder sister introduced me to DC and Marvel universe back in 2018... We were living in a different city for work, far away from parents. After work and cooking, weekends used to be extremely boring for both of us- considering none of us was big on partying.
She made me watch all the movies in chronological order and filled me in with interesting details from comics as well. And that's how she got me hooked. We made it a ritual to watch every Marvel movie at theater from that time onwards. The first movie that we went to watch was Black Panther. On the contrary none of us would buy movie tickets for watching other movies.
Years later, we still follow the ritual. It's 2022 now and coincidentally we both were at home town when Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) released. We booked 2 tickets for Saturday morning 7:30 show. We reached the theater 5-10 mins late, almost sleepy. In a small town like this, regional movies probably see a lot more crowd I'd believe (even I wouldn't be able to validate that myself), but Marvel movies make decent popularity here.
We were surprised to find that barely 10% of the seats were sold, it was like watching a movie in an empty hall. Luckily we didn't miss a scene even after 10 mins delay.
The Story
The movie starts with a father and his daughter struggling in a dessert. The little girl, Love died in his father's arm. Gorr prayed to his deity, Rapu to save her life but all went in vein. Gorr started hearing a mysterious voice, that led him to the realm of Rapu... Rapu seemed indifferent to Gorr's misery and loss, when Gorr turned rebellious, he tried to kill Gorr. The mysterious voice materialized into a sword and appeared in Gorr's hand, with which he killed Rapu and freed himself.
The sword was no ordinary weapon- it was a God-killer named Necrosword. Gorr went to on murder rampage and killed several gods. His next target was new Asgard. Thor was fighting along side guardians of the galaxy, after learning the news he headed to his people.
Thor's ex-girlfriend Dr. Jane Foster was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. When all medical treatments were failing Jane turned to lesser known alternative... She read about Mjolnir's healing capabilities and went to new Asgard to find it. When Jane appeared in front of the broken hammer, the pieces came together and the hammer bonded itself to Jane. This happened because Thor had asked Mjolnir to protect Jane long back.
Thor met with Jane after long time, in new Asgard. Jane was like an invincible goddess with Mjolnir in her hand. They fought together along with Valkyrie and Korg against Gorr... Gorr escaped the scene kidnapping all the kids of new Asgard.
Heimdall's son Axl contacted Thor from the Shadow realm, where the kids were held captive. Thor decided to raise an army of Gods to fight against Gorr. Thor along with Valkyrie and Korg went to Omnipotent city (a hidden city where Gods live safely) only to find the leader of the Gods, Zeus to be reluctant to help them in any shape or form.
When Zeus ordered his army to capture Thor and his companions, they fought bravely and escaped with Zeus's powerful weapon Thunderbolt. Thor and Jane reunited and Jane broke the news of her illness.
They reached Shadow realm and fought with Gorr. Gorr managed to defeat them all and steal Thor's axe, Stormbreaker. He needed Stormbreaker to summon Bifrost and visit the realm of Eternity. Valkyrie got severely injured and Jane's condition was critical as well. Using the hammer just once more could be proven to be deadly...
The final battle took place at Eternity's alter where the children were held captive. Thor insisted on fighting alone this time as both of his companions were unwell. He gave power to all the children through the Thunderbolt to fight against Gorr. They destroyed the killer sword and Jane reached just in time to save Thor from Gorr. Thor, Jane and Gorr are taken to the realm of eternity.
Powerless Gorr was about to make a wish to destroy all the Gods. Thor brought up the idea that he could bring back his precious daughter back to life instead. Thor left Gorr to make his own choice and went to attend dying Jane. While Jane died in Thor's arms, Gorr's wish brought Love back. As per the curse Gorr had to die, however he requested Thor to take care of Love in his absense.
Thor and Love made an invincible father-daughter pair to kill the evils. Valkyrie and Sif started training the kids in new Asgard. People of new Asgard made a statue of Jane to honor her sacrifice...
The movie ends with Herculese, Zeus's son, getting ready to destroy Thor to avenge his father. Jane went to Valhalla (an honorable realm for the Gods who die in battlefield).
My Thoughts on the movie
Can you imagine I watched the entire movie without realizing that Gorr was played by Christian Bale? What a pleasant surprise!
I absolutely loved the little bromance moment between Star-Lord and Thor at the beginning of the movie.
I missed Jane so much in the last movie, Thor and Jane's chemistry melts my heart every single time. I was so disheartened to know that Natalie Portman's contract for the Thor movie-series was over. This movie glued the broken pieces of my heart together, just like Mjolnir, by bringing Jane back.
Jane becoming Lady Thor was everything I didn't know we needed but glad that it happened.
The love triangle between Thor, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker was hilarious. The visual effects always blow my mind away, making the theater experience totally worth-it!
Already lost my weekend-morning's sleep, the movie had to work up to my expectations!
Thor and Zeus on the same screen made me confused- both gods had similar power-similar weapons- what's the difference?
Another major attraction for me is the Thor-Loki encounter... Don't know if we'll get lucky again or not. I'd love to think as a possibility.
Overall, I'd rate this movie 4/5. ^_^
Thanks for reading!
