Congratulations to Dr Sara Eusebi, who has successfully defended her PhD thesis 'Sunt superis sua iura. Ovid, the Law, and the Augustan Discourse'.
Sara provides the first comprehensive examination of the juridical in its socio-cultural context across the Ovidian corpus. She builds a compelling case that as law evolved under Augustus, the micro-semantics of the legal in Ovid's work also evolved. Probing Ovid's dialogue with Augustus' role as law-giver and the imperial narrative of power, law and justice, Sara shows how Ovid's deceptive narratives respond to the 'fictive' nature of Augustan justice and provides a valuable new way to understand the law in the macro-semantics of Ovid's work from elegy to exile.
