I'm Ghanaian. Just as me not being called Amina will make everyone assume I am a Christian, the same way it's automatic that I should eat meat.
Growing up, eating meat was not an everyday occurrence though. Meat was more expensive than fish. I don't think imported frozen chicken was that common back then. Free range chickens were usually killed during special events like birthdays and Christmas. Sheep and cows for even more special and bigger events. I guess this led to the extra love attached to eating meat, because it's not everyday you got to eat it. That of course is not the case at present, some eat meat 3 times daily.
Me saying I love meat is an exaggeration, just to express strongly that I am not vegan lol. I more often than not eat my foods without animal protein, usually because I am cheap. Ghanaian vegans are few and new, those that will actually use the term 'vegan' are influenced largely by new age spirituality or woke culture (I am in there somewhere). There are non-meat eaters in traditional African spirituality as well, and for them it is usually a specific taboo assigned to them by the deities they serve. It can be a limitation to a specific animal or anything that bleeds upon killing. Usually fishes don't count though.
I will admit that I have a dislike for passionate vegans. Those that think everyone else should be following their good healthier example. An annoying type that I don't really care much about is the online vegans that comment under every cute animal post about how one can't claim to love animals and eat meat at the same time. Guess what? I do love animals and do eat meat. Some people eat cats in Ghana, it's common enough. I know some, even witnessed the killing and cooking of a cat. Now I loveeeeee cats, and personally won't kill a cat to eat, but if I happen to unknowingly get fed cat meat, I won't fret it either. Haven't tasted cat meat yet to my knowledge, but have been tricked to eat snake meat and it was delicious. I kept eating it after being told.
But a comment that annoyed me most on veganism, was an African Diasporan new age spiritual practitioner, coming to Ghana to connect more through African Traditional Religion, and telling me to my face that eating meat blocks the level of spiritual connection to whatever, ancestors, gods, source, whatever. Like you do know we perform animal sacrifices right? What do you think happens to the carcass after the blood is spilled? Like you trying to connect with African ancestors and telling me unless I follow Eastern spiritual practices that it's not gonna happen? You think our Ghanaian ancestors that were mostly hunters, fishermen and farmers were vegans? Or that they lacked spiritual connection?
A less annoying comment was someone telling me mosquitoes don't bite me as much because I eat meat and my blood is somehow inferior or unhealthy. Wait, get to enjoy delicious meat and be immune to malaria? Hallelujah!
I understand the reasoning or empathy behind veganism. And I did try to become vegetarian for a bit because of that. I do love animals and do believe they have souls. But I also believe plants have souls as well. If that's my reason, which was the only reason for me personally, then I'd much as well starve to death. So I quickly accepted the circle of life narrative. I feed on something, something feeds on me if they are lucky enough to get me before or after I'm dead. Not like I regretted the meat eaten before being introduced to this whole food morality thing.
Funny story, a guy said on their bumble profile that they were a carnivore... somehow my mind thought 'cannibal', and I thought he was just using the term jokingly to stick to vegans. We matched and my first message was "you are a carnivore? Seriously?" He unmatched right away🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Anyway, animal loving vegans don't seem to have a problem with letting wild animals be themselves in the wild. Be truthful to their nature and eat whatever.
So I'm just gonna give that same kindness to myself and simply be what I was created to be; a being that eats whatever pleases it whenever. Whether I evolved to this, was brainwashed into it, or simply a choice I make daily, I eat meat, because I am a being created with the capability to do so.
In all things satisfactory and unsatisfactory, blame the Creator. _unknown(me🤣)
