The fact is you don't always know which is which and you often mix them up. Maybe you are doing that right now, reading this blog on your phone. Did you need to check your phone? No. You thought you needed to but you just wanted to. What you want and what you need. It's so confusing - it's often the reverse of what we think. We don't need a beautiful partner or a certain house or a fancy car but we want them. When we get them, we don't need more space or more money but we want them. We think we need more space so we can fill it with stuff we don't need. We want a conservatory! We don't need a drink (unless it's water) but we are used to choosing to treat ourselves to what we want. We don't need a holiday but they are useful - it's all useful in a way, the accumulation of things; it can be argued for. What you want and what you need. Buying stuff we think we need but really we just want helps us so don't have to face what we really need. (Are you still with me?) What we need may be to introduce some frightening and radical change into our lives. Eek! So what we want trumps what we need need and masks it in a capitalist society where the mantra since Thatcher has been: I want it. I get it. Amen.
