Finding Paka

By Tekuɔ on June 30, 2024

I've got a new baby😻😺, woohoo 🎉.

My Simba died last September and I thought I wouldn't get a new cat till after a year.

Before Simba died, my sister and I often pondered on what we'd do with Simba should the opportunity to travel abroad be presented.
We'd naturally want to take him but concerned it may not be possible either due to cost or how the traveling opportunity came about.
So I intended to wait till such a trip was over and I have a satisfactory and long-term place of abode before getting another cat.

But over the months, I found myself preparing for a new cat. I was window shopping online for cat accessories, and compiling cat names.

Late May, my sister showed me pictures of an  8 weeks old kitten belonging to a new cat mom of one of her church friends. Even though I'd not thought of getting a new cat seriously then, I immediately jumped onto it and said I'd keep it.
That weekend was to be my birthday and I thought I'd pick him up over the weekend, my perfect birthday present.

The 4 days or so waiting period took me through some fears.

The strongest fear was that I wasn't going to get the cat(he was a ginger much like Simba).
This fear was due to how excited I was about getting a new cat, and my recent experiences with getting any new hope or excitement crushed before it could be. And this fear did come to pass.
For a good reason though, the kitten was the only one his mother birthed and the owner thought she'd be lonely if he's taken away.
Also, as much as I was excited to get a new cat, I deep down didn't want one that I could easily confuse for Simba. I won't be able to help comparing cats, but not looking exactly like him will help to not blur the lines.

My other fear was what if the new cat died too? Maybe even within weeks of getting him.
If a cat of mine dies prematurely again, I doubt I'd be able to keep another cat ever again.

Two days before my birthday, my sister saw the kittens our landlady's cat had for the first time and told me about them. She also added that she told the landlady I wanted one and she said okay.

Their mother is a cat we already have a close relationship with, I practically witnessed every aspect of her pregnancy, including conception lol. I only missed the delivery because she stayed in their room to do that.
She gave birth in the first week of May, but kept the babies indoors till their fifth week.

The day before my birthday, I saw the kittens. They were all beautiful, but I was particularly attracted to the only one with a classic fur pattern, like Simba had.

All four kittens looked nothing like their mother or father, but had well mixed black, white, ginger and brown colors.
Two that were tortie-looking I could tell right away were females. But the one with the deep black and white fur and classic pattern, I wasn't sure of. When I approached them, that kitten alone came to me. I was sure that kitten was to be Paka.
I told my landlady I'd pick one of the kittens a month later, and she agreed.

Almost Paka No. 2

The next day, on my birthday, I put all the cat accessories on my wishlist into cart and purchased them.
That included two customized name tags that I gave the name PAKA for.
I had also decided that Paka's color was going to be blue, so most of the accessories were blue.

I'd picked out various cat names, mostly how cat is said in various languages. Paka was the first name on the list, but not in that position by preference. I thought when I got a new cat, I'd go through the names again and choose the one most suitable.

But right from the first potential new cat, I finalized that whichever cat I ended up with was to be called Paka. Paka will be male and his colour will be blue.

Turned out, only one of the 4 kittens was male, and not the one I had in mind.
So by being male(and the cat distribution system), I finally found Paka.
The third time was the charm.

A week later, the Chinese dragon boat festival presented me with a holiday I hadn't anticipated, and I thought that was the best time to bring in my new cat.

Paka is a brown tabby, he has black, brown/ginger and white fur colours. His fur pattern is mackerel.
I brought him home on Saturday, June 8 2024 at 6 weeks old.

Ever got kissed and groomed by a kitten 🐾😻

In my next post, I will introduce Paka; his parents, siblings, personality, life, etc.
