Joe Biden is like a veteran pitcher who has lost his fastball and is getting by on guile and guts. It made him a disappointing campaigner in 2024, but guile and guts are fine qualities for governing. With his SCOTUS reform plan, President Biden is back in the game.
In addition to rolling out his reform package at the LBJ library, Biden wrote an op-ed for the WaPo. Anyone surprised it wasn't the NYT? I certainly was not. They declared war on the president for petty reasons long ago.
It always amuses me when someone like Biden writes an op-ed. The WaPo felt obliged to inform its readers that "the writer is president of the United States." It's better than saying it was written by a staffer, which is how these things work. But Joe had finally approval. I recall the Insult Comedian's reaction to an op-ed piece with his name on it. He seemed surprised that he'd written the best op-ed article in human history. Sorry for that outburst of bluster and bullshit. It's what happens when we live through a news cycle like yesterday.
Back to Biden's plan. It's based on recommendations from a panel report earlier in the administration. It has no chance of passage, but it's a helluva messaging bill, calculated to drive GOPers crazy. Make that crazier. It's apt to make Lindsey Graham weep or shout. Those seem to be his only emotions.
The reform plan has three components:
- A constitutional amendment called the No One Is Above the Law Amendment to overrule the Trump immunity decision.
- 18 year term limits for Justices with a new appointee every two years.
- A binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court complete with enforcement mechanisms.
It's a good start but I would consider adding more Supremes. There's nothing sacred about the number 9 except to John Lennon:

Number 9, number 9, number 9. I could go on for infinity and beyond but don't want to be confused with Buzz Lightyear. I'm more of a Mr. Potato Head guy since he was voiced by Don Rickles. Shecky digs Mr. Warmth.
Back to the Roberts Court. They've managed to disgrace themselves in manifold ways since 2020. We've had grifting by Thomas and Alito as well as the horrendous over reach of Dobbs, the Chevron case, and the Trump immunity case. Shaming them doesn't work, so a slap upside the head is in order for this MAGA-fied court.
Vice President Harris has endorsed the Biden plan and is already campaigning on it. I'm just glad that Joe Biden is back in the game.
The last word goes to Syl Johnson:
