If you’ve been wondering where I was, and why I haven’t been as active on Substack as I did back when I started, it’s because I’ve been busy writing chapters for my novel on WebNovel and Chereads. It’s titled, ‘Bound by the Vampire Prince’, and it’s essentially about a world far into the future where the country is divided into two territories: the land for the humans, and the vampires. Here’s the synopsis of the story: In a world divided between humans and vampires, Rose Everen, a human scientist, rescues a captive vampire, only to be betrayed. So how exactly did I come up with a story like this? The short version is: I was inspired by Billy Idol’s discography. Listening to his old songs take me back to the kind of vampire I love as a teen. From True Blood, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the show the practically raised me, The Vampire Diaries. I wanted to capture that electric vampire energy. How alluring, dangerous and magnetic they can be. The darker, grittier and more adult versions of vampires compared to the glossy teen flick versions we’ve grown used to. I want them to be real vampires. The true creatures of the night, ones that thrived on blood and danger. Not romanticized, not softened, but raw and untamed. I decided that the best way to do this is to write it in a dystopian setting. In a world where cities are collapsing and survival is fragile, the presence of vampires would feel naturally more threatening, and paradoxically, more enticing. Vampires symbolize a life that appears simpler and more sustainable. They are stronger, immune to hunger, untouched by time and nearly impossible to kill, save for a stake through the heart of exposure to the sun. If anyone compare this to the daily struggles of human survival, their existence would seem more like an appealing alternative. Yet, the cost of such existence cannot be ignored. Becoming a vampire requires the ultimate sacrifice: the loss of humanity itself. And it’s precisely that trade-off, the temptation of power against the deterioration of our identities, is what makes their allure so compelling. This is the struggle that the main character of the story, Rose Everen, would have to deal with, given she was forcefully transitioned into a vampire. In contrast, the male lead, Ravić, must undergo the opposite journey, learning what humanity truly means by seeing it reflected through Rose’s perspective. So yeah, this is what I’ve been up to lately.
