Many theories relate to detective stories, like how a detective is always meant to link the chain of clues or connect the missing pieces of the puzzle. Eventually, one way or the other, the story plot leads the detective to the main culprit, criminal, or the perpetrator in the detective story. There are certainly different kinds of theories in detective stories that make them so intriguing to read. The detective story genre consists mainly of suspense and thriller, but other elements are embedded in it, such as  adventure, romance, plot twists, mystery, and criminal behavior.

Many critics, psychologists, and intellectuals have put these novels to the test and have found them quite readable. Psychologists such as Rycroft and Pederson Krag have even gone so far as to say that people who read detective stories subconsciously revert to their feelings from childhood. While reading such stories, they satisfy their curiosity when kids are interested in exploring. In their childhood, some children even picture their parents to be the victims, the criminal being themselves, and the detective being their siblings. Being a reader of detective stories myself, I would just as easily be deeply concerned to find out the true identity of the main antagonist or the criminal, or even the murderer. I would not rest until I find out if my assumptions about any character in the detective story are true or not.

Philosophies Regarding Detective Stories

American poet Wystan Hugh Auden has linked and compared detective stories to mirror them with Arthurian's quest to find the Holy Grail. Detective stories are set in idyllic surroundings and environment, where peace is disturbed by a vicious crime by the main perpetrator. Some people try to ease their inner sense of guilt by transferring it to the main characters in detective stories. Many people will  personally link themselves up with the main characters in the detective storyline. Unlike mythological fiction stories, detective stories are often inspired by true story events and have a reality-based element in them.

What Makes Detective Stories So Interesting to Read

While the reader is trying to identify the criminal in the storyline, the reader also works through the detective's details and findings and assumes themselves to play the detective's assistant in their imagination to help him out. The reader even thinks of an ideal situation in their imagination and suggests ways for the detective, with his superior skills and abilities, to triumph against the criminal's trickery and solve the case just as easily, as if it is a game of chess.

Detective stories are also able to describe the murderer or antagonist and his motives very clearly. Some detective stories show the victim to be innocent and guilty at the same time, as they have had no choice but to commit the crime. However, it also includes riddles, twists and turns, incidental love interests and love triangles, a climax, and a very interesting plot. With all that, the detective still reveals the truth sooner or later, and the story features the criminal to be the unluckiest person in the end as he is caught by the detective. Some detective stories portray the villain to be smart, but in the end, it is the detective who solves the case, defeating and catching the bad guy.

Detective Stories and Our Society

Detective stories usually reveal a primitive society's workings, where the criminal or the murderer seems to get away with what he has done and make someone suffer for it. A sacrifice is made in the story through the status quo, power, connections, and societal norms. But eventually, peace is restored, justice is served, and the balance between good and evil is restored. Unlike in the detective stories, our society has to suffer from such individuals who get away and are set free even after committing crimes.

One of the best books that I have read so far about detective stories is 'Lightning Strikes Twice' from the Urbanax Files written by an amazing author Ric Frances. The author has connected all the dots of the crime in his story where a kidnapping takes place. The way he has beautifully portrayed all the characters in the story plot is impressive and has included all the necessary details. The storyline is an amazing detective story, and the detailing of the characters and plot make it even more interesting.
