Keeping tabs on the NSF-supported science taken away from all of us

See what got revoked, and add your project to the list if necessary. Revocations are not over yet.

It’s a brobdingnagian task to keep tabs on all of the knowledge that is being suppressed, across all the federal agencies. From NOAA to the CDC to the USDA, the EPA, NIH, and beyond. I’d like to share with you the corner of this effort related to the current shenanigans being done to those whose work and professional development has been supported through NSF, the National Science Foundation.

What grants are they eliminating, even after they’ve been awarded? It looks extremely haphazard and not evidence-based in the slightest, but they’re targeting things that are related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and also eliminating research to understand and prevent disinformation and misinformation. If you look at the new statement of NSF’s priorities, it’s full of the absurdities we expect from the Trump administration.

A spectacular resource is this crowdsourced list of grants that have been cancelled in NSF. Please spread the word about this so it can be as complete as possible. Here is the link to report a cancelled grant to this list.

I should point out that one person who I trust said that mentioned that we can expect more of these to come down on Friday and/or Monday, so they’re not done.

Another element of this is that Panch, the director of NSF, just stepped down moments ago. While his leadership has been inadequate for this difficult moment, just imagine the toady they’ll put in to replace him.

They can’t stop us from doing good science. But they’re doing what they can to make it harder, and harder. I’ve been heartened by the community of academics who are resolved to keep on keeping on. The people who will occupy this planet in the future deserve our effort!
