Would it really kill, for people to be kind? To treat others the way they’d want to be treated? Why does something as simple as this, can be so rare these days? It’s not like we’re asking for a million dollars, two kidneys and a quarter of a soul. All we’re literally asking for is just plain simple: be kind. Why is it so hard? Is it because of social media? Is it because now that we’ve established our goals, we’re suddenly greater than everyone? I don’t know, I literally don’t. What prompted me to write this, is the recent experiences I’ve had with a few particularly difficult clients. Even before any work had begun, before any payments were made and definitely, before anything was finalized, they were already demanding, shouting and intimidating my team. We were simply in the early stages, discussing what kinds of products they might be interested in and what qualities they were looking for. Yet somehow, they were already making endless lists of demands and treating my colleagues with complete disrespect. It was honestly disgusting to witness. First thing in the morning, soon as we arrived in the office, I had to witness my team members being berated at, for something that hasn’t even started. And it’s just ridiculous, the way these people would go on and on about the things they weren’t happy about. How they’ve bought this and that, and had no problem. How, my subordinates have no right in working for my company, telling me I should fire them because they didn’t have the necessary skills to carry out the job, that mind you, hasn’t even started yet. All those harsh words, right in front of their faces. I can’t help but wonder, does it really kill you to be kind? Seriously, do some people honestly believe they’ll be struck by lightning if they just something nicer than ‘you should fire your employees’ right in front of their faces? Honestly, as a business owner, I strongly feel that if your criticism isn’t constructive, then don’t bother to give it. Because once people aren’t eager to work for you, they’re never going to produce the best work for your company. How could they, when they’ve lost their drive and enthusiasm? When everything they do, they’re met with endless criticisms? It’s not nice. And it’s definitely not kind. People who create such work environments aren’t going to places, that’s for sure. It might’ve worked in the past, but it certainly isn’t going to work today. All these people are going to get are bad rep, and let me tell you, it doesn’t take a genius for people to know how damaging bad reputations can be, to a career. Especially if you lead a team, or run a business yourself.
If you asked me what happened after? These clients knew exactly what they were doing, and they knew it was wrong. I didn’t know why these types of clients chose this week, out of all the weeks in the calendar, to show up on our doorstep but at least one of them had the decency to apologize, after nearly making one of my team members cry. Most of the others? They simply hung up their phones, or brush it off like it meant nothing, acting like a politician who have said their piece. Thinking they’ve somehow changed the world with a few choice words. And let me be clear: this all happened when the work hasn’t even started yet. But with this behavior, I’ve decided to drop some of their projects, at least the ones that went over the line. No amount of money is worth being treated like you’re less than a human being. Especially at this day and age. Really, to see someone being treated like that, it’s truly disgusting. Probably one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot of filth in my more-than-two decades of life. So yeah, let us all strive to be kind. Even when we’re often treated poorly or we are seeing others being mistreated, let us all be the kind of people we wish there were more of in this world. Today and in the future. Because ultimately, it all starts with us. Sincerely, Cherie. The Whiffler is free today.
